What Is a JSON Path Tester?

A JSON Path tester lets you run a JSONPath expression against JSON data and see exactly which values it returns. JSONPath is a query language for JSON, similar to what XPath is for XML. Instead of searching through a large JSON file by hand, you write an expression like $.items[*].sku and get the matching values.

ToolsViewer's online JSONPath tester runs in your browser. Paste or import your JSON, enter an expression, and click Query to see the match count, the path of each match, and the matched values.

How to Use the JSON Path Tester

Step 1: Add your JSON
Paste JSON into the editor, import a .json or .txt file, fetch a public URL, or load the sample data.

Step 2: Enter a JSONPath expression
Type your expression in the sidebar, for example $.items[*].sku. Your expression is remembered in your browser, so it is there when you come back.

Step 3: Click Query
The tool runs the expression against your JSON. Click Query again whenever you change the data or the expression.

Step 4: Review and save the output
The output shows the number of matches, the path of each match, and the matched values. Copy the output, download it, or send your JSON to a related tool.

JSON Path Tester Features

  • Run JSONPath expressions against your JSON
  • Dot and bracket notation, wildcards, slices, and filters
  • Output with match count, normalized paths, and matched values
  • Expression saved in your browser between visits
  • Sample, Import, Fetch URL, Query, and Download options
  • Send your JSON to related tools
  • Clear errors for empty input, invalid JSON, or invalid expressions
  • JSON editors with copy and zoom
  • Private processing in your browser

Common Uses

Extract data from API responses: Pull specific fields out of a large response without scrolling through it.

Debug JSONPath expressions: Check an expression here before using it in code, an API client, or an automation tool.

Find the path to a value: The output includes the path of each match, so you can see where a value sits in the structure.

Learn JSONPath: Try different expressions on the sample data and see what each one returns.

Supported Formats

  • JSON text
  • .json files
  • .txt files containing JSON
  • Public URLs
  • Output as a JSON report

The tester supports standard JSONPath syntax, including filters and wildcards. A few rarely used syntax variations may behave differently from other tools.
